Learn to Program: The Fundamentals

I have been participating in a class, "Learn to Program: The Fundamentals
" on Coursera. The teachers are using Python, I did the first assignment this weekend. I was at first stuck, but; once my math brain kicked in I got hooked. I found myself at work the next day, working the problems in my head. I had to stop and park twice to write out ideas for possible solutions. I think I am going to get a lot out of this course. I have really enjoyed the challenge.

Ohio Linux Fest 2012

Went to the Ohio Linux Fest this past weekend, had a great time. The two keynotes I saw were excellent.  Saturday morning Keynote was by Wendy Seltzer about "Stopping SOPA and its Spawn: Free Expression on the Internet". Wendy's talk was a good analysis of the continued fight against SOPA and its kind.  The final Keynote of the day was by Angela Byron "How to Create Ravenously Passionate Contributors". Angela's talk was inspiring and made me want to learn more about Drupal. Over all the talks I attended were informative, they gave me new ideas and projects to consider. The talk I most enjoyed was by Deb Nicholson "
We Will Be Legion: Decentralizing the Web" she talked about fedarated web services, there strengths and benefits. On Sunday I attended the "Diversity in Open Source Workshop" it got me thinking of where I can jump and help. Overall it was a enjoyable weeked, I even got my nap in at Goodale park : )

Repairing a Z-Turn,

My friends zero turn started sputtering real bad with a bad oil leak. He dropped it off for me to fix. First I tackled the oil leak. Figured trying to trouble shoot with oil spraying every  would not be good. So the leak turned out to be the sump cover which required removing the engine from the frame of the mower. While I had the cover off I replaced two seals and the sump cover gasket. That job was not to bad had to tighten the bolts to 200 ft inches, used a cross pattern to tighten the cover down evenly.

So now it is all back together, initially I got it to run. I was glad to to see no oil leaks. Then it crapped out quickly, it got to where it would not start. I thought maybe it was the solenoid. So I got the multimeter out checked the voltage of the solenoid when it was in crank position it read 12 volts. So I believe I have narrowed it down to a safety switch so I will have to use the multimeter to ferret out the culprit. That will be next weekends chore, my weekends are Tue,Wed. and Thur.

Upgrading a Apple G4 Powerbook

I received a request to install iTunes 10 on a G4 Powerbook so they could sync their iPhone 4s. I found that their version of OS X would not support iTunes 10 and they need to upgrade to OS X 10.5.8 which is the highest release that still supports PPC processors from what I could find. They also need a new battery and very likely a new PRAM battery as well.

So what I am going to do is :
  • Doing a full backup of all data before upgrade
  • adding 1GB of ram (allowing them to max out at 2GB)
  • needs a new battery
  • check PRAM battery
  • Do a fresh install of OS X 10.5.x
to be continued...

MSE broken upgrade gave error #0x80070643

My friends laptop was not letting him like anything or click on images in Facebook. I suspected  out of date software, maybe Firefox or Flash. He was out of date on those, Microsoft Security Essential(MSE) as well as behind two service packs for Vista. All of the updates except MSE went fine, MSE failed to update. In the failure the previous install was broken and left behind  cruft. I tried re-installing MSE a few times with reboots, tried a couple of MS Fix-it options nothing worked. In the end I found this link and that gives a batch file to run.  I ran the batch file, rebooted and was able to install the newest version of MSE. Below is the batch file that was run, that fixed the issue. At the bottom of the post is a  Pinboard RSS with a list  of links I found related to the error code.

Melancholy Landscaping

My Mom asked me to do yard clean up at my Grandma's house. I spent sixteen hours digging up honey suckle, pulling weeds, trimming bushes and cleaning up the beds. In all I took out three truck loads of debris. These are a some photos of the finished job, I was happy with the results but it was all a bit melancholy.

My Grandma would not let me do much other than cut the grass, while she was still living in her house. Her sense of her own mortality and that of other beings has increased in her later years. It seems that seeing other things dying even a honeysuckle plant somehow makes her own death seem closer. She is suffering from dementia, it has been hard to see such a strong willed person lose their bearings. She had lived on her own since my Grandfather passed away in 1970. My memory of her as kid was someone who never needed help but was there when we did. As her dementia has progressed she still thinks she is that person and is resistant to help. It has been challenging for my Mom and Aunt to do what is best for her while leaving her as much autonomy as possible. They moved her to a retirement home last year, they have had some tough decisions to make. I do not envy them.
